Juventus’ fourth loss in Serie A against Sassuolo had left the defending Serie A champions 12th in the standings with 12 points from 10 games. Things were near catastrophic and the Old Lady was almost certainly out of the Scudetto race as Roma, Fiorentina, Inter, Napoli and even Lazio were fighting for the top spot. Right after the loss Max Allegri took full responsibility and vowed to get his team out of that situation by focusing on improving the squad’s team effort.
The week following the loss to Sassuolo, Juventus put on a better show and won the Turin derby 2-1 over Torino. Their performance wasn’t their best but it brought them the needed result. Juventus grabbed a second win in a row against Empoli, the first this season. Although they won the match 3-1, their performance was full of flaws. They conceded early on but were lucky as Mandzukic was lucky to score his goal. The end result was the most important as they went into the game against Milan in an improved position. With injuries now behind, the morale is improving in Turin. Their last three results speak volumes: Wins against Milan, Manchester City at home and a 3-0 win away to Palermo.
Alex Sandro has reveled defensively and offensively as well. He’s been superb often playing as a left back and at other occasions as a left midfielder. If he continues such solid performances then Juventus are less likely to concede early in their future fixtures as they already did in seven Serie A games already. Buffon who holds a big share of responsibility was able to record three consecutive clean sheets between Serie A and the Champions League. If they are to continue fighting for the top three Buffon needs to keep the same form. The losses of Andre Pirlo, Arturo Vidal, Fernando Llorente and Carlos Tevez had severe effects on the team but their replacements Sami Khedira, Juan Cuadrado Paulo Dybala and Mario Mandzukic have finally gelled with the rest of the team. Paul Pogba is back on form and dominating in the midfield and now the only needed thing is consistency.
Allegri’s team is improving and will continue to do so in a bid to enter the Scudetto race. Two more important games await the Old Lady: Lazio and Fiorentina. Juve are only seven points off the top spot and now that they started winning, it’s hard to see them stop but those upcoming games could decide more or else what they will be aiming for. In Europe, they’re on the track to finish top of their group. They have all the potential to aim to go as far as possible, on paper, only Barcelona and Bayern Munich are better than them but if the Bianconeri adapt their play they can take on any team in the world. The Old Lady is back on its feet.
